AUSTRALIA - Mayo 2013
Good to lead off with better news than last time! Congrats to Australia's number 1 Grandmaster, Zong-Yuan Zhao, who has won the Bangkok Open outright on 7.5/9. Zhao was seeded tenth for the tournament and his true performance rating in winning it was 2752. His key win was an excellent victory with Black against former world championship challenger GM Nigel Short (2697), in which Zhao's pawn sacrifices made Short's position very unpleasant to play.
It is possible Short is actually the highest FIDE-rated opponent defeated by an Australian in a classical game -if anyone knows of evidence otherwise, let me know. (He is certainly not the highest ranked - according to Bill Gletsos, GM Ian Rogers defeated Portisch,Korchnoi and Short all with black when each was ranked 4thor so in the world.) Short also lost to a spectacular combination by IM Gary Lane in the 2004 Olympiad.
Other Australians in the event were IM Max Illingworth (6/9) and FM Tim Reilly and Fedja Zulfic (each 4.5). There were 202 entries.
