GUYANA.- Chess introduced al Garden Secondary School

GUYANA - Agosto 2013

The Covent Garden Secondary School, East Bank Demerara will now fully include chess on its sports calendar when school re-opens in September. The school is recognized for its participation in local sports such as athletics, football, cricket and even rugby. A modest donation of four chess sets to the school by US based Guyanese and past student Vincent Persaud has lit the path for students to be exposed for the first time to the royal game.

Persaud, a graduate of the class of ‘79’ said his contribution is a small gesture of thanks to the school that provided secondary education for him and three other brothers. “The donation is to help foster extra-curricular activities for the present students,” he remarked via email to Shiv Nandalall, President of the Guyana Chess Federation.

Nandalall presented the sets to the students on behalf of Persaud in early June this year. He explained that chess is a very easy game to learn and challenged the female students to seriously take up the game. Noting that it is a constant challenge to get players from the distaff side, Nandalall quipped that ”girls can beat boys at chess” during the simple presentation ceremony attended by students and teachers alike. Headmistress of the school Ms. Cecilia Alves also welcomed the inclusion of chess at Covent Garden Secondary.

Veteran chess player David Khan commenced training sessions with teachers in June and more training will resume for both teachers and students when school re-opens in September.
