BARBADOS
Veteran player Othneil Harewood has taken firm control of the second qualifier for the 2013 Barbados national chess championship being played at the Chess Centre in Cavans Lane, Bridgetown.
Othneil leads the field with six wins from six games as he has dominated the field with strong and accurate play. In the last round he played solidly to dispatch Jerome Harewood of the Lodge School.
With this win Othneil has jumped out to a one and half points lead and with this cushion he should be able to win the tournament bar a complete collapse in the next three rounds.
Two players sit on 4 ½ points and remain within striking distance. These are Lawrence Depradine who won from Corinne Howard by default in the latest round and Jakeel Harewood who defeated current ladies national champion Katrina Blackman.
A group of players have four points and these include Steven Lucas, Justin Parsons, Michael Barker and current under 12 national champion Kyle Sandiford. In round 6, Lucas and Parsons battled to a draw, Barker defeated Donna Forde-Murray and Sandiford sprung an upset when he defeated his higher rated opponent Mark Lowe.
Other players recording victories in the last round included Asabi Layne, Bryan Prescod, Justin Maloney, Gabriela Cumberbatch, Jerran Coppin and Jaden Franklyn. Royston Hoyte and Nitin Mahtani drew their game.
In the next round the feature match will see Othneil Harewood battling Jakeel Harewood, as Jakeel seeks revenge for his sibling Jerome's loss to Othneil.
